KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Today marks the 10-year anniversary of a devastating ice storm that left hundreds of thousands of people without power for days as the city was smothered in nearly three inches of solid ice.

The January 30, 2002, storm, which killed at least one person, damaged nearly 500,000 trees in the Kansas City area alone. The ice also caused power transformers to explode, leading to a number of fires across the metro area.

In some neighborhoods, power was not restored for nearly two weeks.
