KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Police continued their investigation Monday into the tragic death of a 26-year-old mother, whose death Saturday night during a bachelorette party celebration, has troubled many who hear about it.
Jamie Frecks was in a party bus with 15 friends when she fell out of the bus onto I-35. Part of the interstate was shut down so investigators could map-out the location of the accident. Police are also still trying to determine how the rear emergency door opened.
Police needed a search warrant to gather evidence from the bus.
Police say one woman told them that Frecks had walked to the back of the bus and bent down to pick something up. The woman said Frecks fell out of the bus as she stood up.
According to investigators, many of the women on the bus did not see Frecks fall.
“At this time we have no idea of how and why it came open,” said Howard Dickinson, Kansas Highway Patrol. “It’s not a standard back door like most would envision on a school bus,” Dickinson said. “It’s not one of those big paddle doors that we make intentionally easy to open for a child.”
The Kansas Highway Patrol is reviewing the safety records of Midnight Express Party Bus, the company the women used for Saturday night’s celebration.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is a division of the Department of Transportation, and it enforces safety regulations for commercial and mass passenger carriers.
Another chauffeur company unrelated to Midnight Express Party Bus told FOX 4 that emergency doors and windows in their vehicles aren’t designed to just fly open easily.
“There are steps involved and they’re not just a quick-release because that would be very dangerous,” said Diane Forgy with Overland Chauffered Services. “This is an unfortunate situation and we don’t have enough information to judge what happened and why and how it can be avoided.”
