Preferred boundaries for Olathe West High School revealed following months of study

OLATHE, Kan. — At Thursday night’s regular board meeting, members of the Olathe Board of Education will present a preferred boundary choice for the new Olathe West High School under construction near 135th and Hedge Lane Road in Olathe.  The new high school will be the district’s fifth, and is slated to open in August of 2017.

The proposed boundaries come after months of study.  A boundary review committee made up of nearly 100 district staffers, parents, and community members met throughout January and later held four open houses to solicit parent feedback about the options for change. Parents will have another opportunity to offer opinions and concerns about the board’s proposed boundary map at the board April 7th meeting.

The mascot will be Olathe West Owls, and the school colors will be blue and silver.  Jay Novacek, currently an assistant principal at Olathe Northwest, was named Olathe West’s new principal at the board’s February meeting.

With about 29,000 students, Olathe Public Schools is the largest school district in the Kansas City metropolitan area.  The current proposal would open Olathe West with about 1,000 students, and is projected to have a little more than 2,000 students by 2024.
