Private donations will spur educational growth in Blue Vallley schools

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The nearly $50,000 handed out in the Blue Valley School District on Monday morning didn’t come from property tax dollars, but private donations. FOX 4’s John Holt joined the Blue Valley Educational Foundation’s spring ‘Surprise Squad’ to hand out nearly $50,000 in Sunflower Grants.

The grant winners will use the money for educational tools they want for their classrooms or schools. At Cedar Hills Elementary a $2,000 grant will fund books that demonstrate different types of writing in a one-stop shopping form.

“We’ll be able to write by persuasive writing, informative writing, personal narratives, and just all the kids to see what authors really do and to read books that are examples of that,” Cedar Hills teacher Shelly Allmon said.

At Sunset Ridge Elementary the school got a $5,000 grant to help fund a video broadcast system for morning announcements. Fifth graders will use the system to learn leadership and communication skills.
