KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former post office supervisor facing felony charges for stealing the mail could serve no jail time. According to court records, Marcy Galapo has struck a deal with the US Attorney’s Office. In exchange for a guilty plea by Galapo on one felony count of mail theft, the prosecutor will recommend to the judge that she receive probation.
The plea agreement comes more than a year after Galapo was first questioned by police and federal agents after 465 pieces of mail and 160 postal bins were found stashed inside her Lee’s Summit home.
When FOX 4 Problem Solvers confronted Galapo about the stolen mail, she denied any knowledge of it. After Problem Solvers informed Galapo that a reporter had seen the mail inside her home, she said she was being framed by her son, referring to it as a “personal family drama.”
But according to court records, Galapo has now pleaded guilty to stealing mail. Federal sentencing guidelines show that she could have been sentenced to as many as five years in prison and hit with a $250,000 fine.
But the plea agreement states that because Galapo has accepted responsibility for her actions and saved the government the time and expense of a trial by pleading guilty, probation will be recommended to the judge.
Although judges are not bound by plea agreements, they typically follow the prosecutor’s recommendation. Galapo is expected to be sentenced later this summer.
