Prom time especially meaningful for special metro kid

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — It’s prom time again, and that usually means the student body crowns a two special kids as king and queen.

For one high school in Independence, the term special takes on another meaning.

The William Chrisman high school prom might be over but this was a night to remember, especially for Alec Belk. He has a disorder that is a combination of autism and ADHD.

But that doesn’t stop him from reaching milestones like winning prom king.

Belk says he initially didn’t even want to come, but he eventually did—and he was in for a big surprise as he actually won prom king.

His mom, Lisa Porter, says knew before hand so she had her camera ready.

“It’s great to see him accomplish as much as he is,” said Porter. “Graduation this year and prom, now he gets to put prom king on that.”
