CLAY COUNTY, Mo. — The Clay County Sheriff’s Office announced charges regarding the 1990 homicide of Cliff McClanahan.
Prosecutors have charged Annette Davis, 44, with second-degree murder. Police said McClanahan was killed August 1990 in Smithville, Mo.
The Clay County Cold Case Squad reopened the case in January 2013. In May 2013, a detective asked the crime lab to recheck the fingers prints in the 23-year-old case.
In September 2013 police got a match for Davis. After weeks of searching for her, detectives found her living on the streets. During a police interview, she admitted to killing McClanahan.
According to the probable cause, McClanahan was known for picking up black, female prostitutes. He was known to take them back to his house where they would spend a couple of days together.
During the police interrogation, Davis admitted to being with McClanahan at his home in August 1990. She told authorities she was smoking crack cocaine in his kitchen. Davis said McClanahan was opposed to drugs and became upset and slapped her in the face. Davis said she then stabbed McClanahan multiple times.
Davis has spent time in prison for drug related offenses in the past.
She is expected to be arraigned Wednesday, Dec. 4. She is currently being held on $500,000 bond.
