KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police arrested 52 people Thursday afternoon who were protesting at 14th and Prospect during a demonstration over fast food wages.
Protests for higher wages were happening all across the nation. Organizers hope the protests will push companies like McDonald’s, Taco Bell and Wendy’s to pay their workers at least $15 an hour.
The coast-to-coast “Fight for $15” event is sponsored by several groups, which promised acts of civil disobedience throughout the day.
In Kansas City, organizers chose two locations for protests: Popeye’s Chicken at 103rd and State Line Road and McDonald’s at 14th and Prospect.
Some of the protesters at 14th and Prospect are trained protesters, willing to be arrested, and they wear red shirts with the words “WE ARE WORTH MORE” on the back.
The arrests came as protesters blocked the ramp onto I-70 and wouldn’t let drivers through near the Prospect McDonald’s. FOX 4’s Judy Le and John Pepitone were on the scene and will have more on FOX 4 News and on fox4kc.com. Refresh this page for updates.
