Raymore Mayor Quitting Over Tax Trouble

RAYMORE, Mo. — Raymore Mayor Juan Alonzo says that the citizens deserve better and is resigning after failing to file state income taxes in 2007.

Alonzo, who has served as an elected official in Raymore since 1999, says that the unfiled return was an oversight that he didn’t even know about until he was contacted by the state in July. He submitted his resignation on Friday.

According to Missouri Department of Revenue records, Alonzo owed nearly $11,000 after failing to pay roughly $7,500 in 2007. Alonzo says that he eventually mailed the tax forms and a check after the state filed a judgement against him last October.

Alonzo says that he didn’t violate city or state statutes, but said that public officials should be held to a higher standard, and that’s why he is stepping down.

Raymore councilmember Jeffrey Adams will serve as mayor until the next municipal election set for next April.
