KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Holiday, students at Rockhurst University spent Monday doing a service project as part of the school’s annual observance.
The students spent the day volunteering at the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge. The lodge provides free housing for cancer patients traveling to the metro to receive treatment.
Claire Goldkamp, a freshman at Rockhurst University, spent the day with patients and baked some warm treats all in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday.
“We are off from school today so we don’t have to study or work at school. I think it’s great we can go out to our community and give back in a different way,” said Goldkamp
Many of the students say they’ve volunteered for several years to serve in the community on the holiday, and it’s become a tradition.
