Royals Use Groupon to Fill the Stands

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Royals are going Groupon. Half off tickets are available for Royals’ Games. The tickets were featured as Monday’s deal on the Groupon website.

The pitch is to build on a winning month of May by offering tickets half off for games against the Brewers and Cardinals at the end of June. The Royals say the discount isn’t because of their 23-29 losing record and poor play at home.

In fact, the Royals say average attendance is up a couple of thousand people compared to 2011. Fans like Joel Parker say they’ll buy a ticket no matter what.

“It’s great coming out to the ballpark!” said Parker. “I’m a big Royals fan so I’ll pay for a ticket no matter what.”

With an average of 17,000 empty seats a game, the Royals say nothing is off-limits in order to fill the K.

“We need to maximize our revenue and maximize the number of people who are in the stands,” said Toby Cook with the KC Royals.

The discounted games are some of the last home games before the All-Star break. The Royals say a bigger crowd would be great practice and make them better prepared for the All-Star game at Kauffman Stadium.
