Screening DVDs: 2 Guns, Disney’s Planes, The To-Do List, We’re the Millers, The World’s End

KANSAS CITY, Mo

1) 2 GUNS
(R)
Universal

RUSS
Two guns are better than one in the over-the-top shoot-‘em-up, “2 Guns” with Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. The plot gets progressively absurd as it goes along, but the presence of Wahlberg and Washington is enough to earn three popcorn bags for “2 Guns.”

SHAWN
Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are excellent together. But the two together can’t
lift the weak script.

2. DISNEY’S PLANES
(PG)
Walt Disney

RUSS
“Planes” is Disney Animation’s innocuous follow up to Pixar’s “Cars 2.” It was originally meant to be a direct to DVD release…and it feels like it. While “Planes” gets off the ground, it never quite soars.

SHAWN
Never soars? That’s an understatement. Only the very young and I mean very young will find this dud entertaining. Can’t believe Disney and Pixar put their names on this.

3. THE TO DO LIST
(R)
CBS Films

RUSS:
“The To-Do List,” a shameless and unfunny gross-out teen sex comedy. A terrific cast s utterly wasted in this awkward and messy mishmash. It’s almost enough to make you want to take a vow of chastity.

SHAWN
“The To Do List” is hilarious and my favorite comedy of 2013. Love the awkward sense of humor and Aubrey Plaza is a genius.

4. WE’RE THE MILLERS
(R)
New Line Cinema

RUSS
KC’s own Jason Sudeikis stars alongside Jennifer Aniston in the broad and extremely blue comedy, “We’re the Millers.” All taste is thrown out the family’s RV window, but “We’re the Millers” provides some shameless laughs for those who aren’t easily offended.

SHAWN
When “We’re the Millers” works it’s funny stuff but there are also moments of dullness. Basically a family road trip movie that barely survives the fact that it’s a one-joke movie.

5. THE WORLD’S END
(R)
Focus Features

RUSS
The team behind the British horror spoof “Shaun of the Dead” reunites for the apocalyptic comedy, “The World’s End.” Five buddies attempt one last pub crawl only to discover that the very future of humanity is at stake. Broad, funny and profane, “The World’s End” is a R-rated commentary on arrested development.

SHAWN
It’s a punchy and fun piece of work that is basically an end of the world movie that barely survives the fact that it’s a one-joke movie. But a well-written one.
