Semi truck drives off road and into creek during severe weather

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Traffic was moving slowly on I-435 after a semi drove off the road and into a creek on Sunday.

In the video above you can see how far back the semi was when it went off road as it was driving northbound.

Police say the driver of the semi lost control and landed under the interstate in Schoal Creek. He was then rushed to a local hospital. Police say he was banged up but is expected to survive.

A tactical unit was right behind the semi when it started to go off the highway and was able to intervene quickly and get the driver out of the truck.

Investigators don’t believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, but as part of the investigation they will be testing for it.

“He appears to be in his 60’s. The load he was hauling in his trailer I believe was auto parts. There was some concern about fuel and oil leaking from the truck that’s why hazmat is out here trying to contain that,” said Captain Derek McCollum with the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department.

Investigators called in some heavy machinery to pull the semi out, which closed down south bound I-435 to one lane.
