OLATHE, Kan. — Sunday night was disappointing for seniors at all four Olathe High Schools. They were supposed to graduate, but Mother Nature changed those plans.
The parking lot at Olathe East High School should be packed for graduation ceremonies. However, that wasn’t the case Sunday night.
“We were really excited thinking we were the first ones here in line,” said Brian Short, who was planning on attending a graduation.
Short was just one of the handful of people that FOX 4 News spoke to that didn’t get the word about Olathe school’s decision to cancel graduation ceremonies at all four high schools.
“I have been waiting for today all year. The preparation, all the things my parents did, it kind of stinks. I think everyone of us bumming right now, but better safe than sorry,” said Carissa Kemnitz — an Olathe East senior.
Kemnitz said the news was definitely a disappointment.
“It is because my friends were going out of town. I wanted to see them graduate. We have been in this together,” Kemnitz said.
Even more disappointing is that some loved ones may have to miss graduation because of travel plans.
“I have to travel out of town for business tomorrow. I’m trying to reschedule,” Jeramie Kemnitz, Carissa’s father told FOX 4 News.
“Then if my dad can’t make it, I will be devastated,” Carissa said.
For others, they said they will make it to the graduation ceremony no matter what.
“We will be back no matter when they reschedule,” Short said.
All four Olathe high schools will hold graduation ceremonies at 7:00 p.m. Monday.
