INDIANAPOLIS — Sex offenders who want to peruse Facebook can continue to do so after an Indiana law was shot down in a federal appeals court on Wednesday.
According to USA Today, the 7th U.S. Circuit of Appeals in Chicago overturned a decision from U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt, saying the “blanket ban” was too broad and did not protect minors.
“We conclude that the Indiana law is not narrowly tailored to serve the state’s interest,” the judges explained in a written decision. “It broadly prohibits substantial protected speech rather than specifically targeting the evil of improper communication to minors.”
In June, Pratt said social networking had created a “virtual playground for sexual predators.”
