Some local school teachers take self defense classes

LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — Seventy-five women around the metro took a self defense class Saturday morning to learn how to protect themselves.

Several women in the class are also school teachers who signed up for the class to protect themselves in the event of a school intruder.

Pavlina Schiavi has been teaching for more than 20 years and says she’s been in three code red situations where an intruder made his way into the school where she was teaching.

While Schiavi says she can’t defend herself against an armed assailant, she feels comfortable learning some techniques to protect herself and her students.

Self defense instructor Bob Thurman says being aware of your surroundings and being prepared to defend yourself is something everyone should do.

Thurman says the best defense is to avoid a confrontation.  But if you’re attacked, he suggests striking the attacker with an open palm to the face and use your elbow to punch
the assailant In the head.
