Stolen items recovered by Clay County Sheriff’s Department

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Nearly 60 items remained locked in the evidence room of the Clay County Sheriff’s Department on Monday.

Among the items are electronics and weapons, including several shotguns, something Lieutenant William Akin finds particularly disturbing.

“People who own the firearms, we want them to own them,” Lt. William Akin of the Clay County Sheriff’s Department said. “We don’t want them stolen and put into the hands of people who don’t need to have them in their hands, and we’re talking about the criminal elements.”

After seeing a man loading items into a vehicle near 172nd street and Ragsdale road one person became suspicious and dialed 911. Around 11:00 p.m. Sunday, deputies responded to the call and followed the car to this nearby shell station where they then arrested the man because the car he was in had been reported stolen.

“Even though the suspect was booked here in clay county, investigators say the property he was found with could have come from anywhere in the metro,” Lt. Akin said. “It can be from Clay County. It can be from Jackson County. It can be from surrounding counties.”

As law enforcement works to find the rightful owners of the recovered items, Lt. Akin offered his advice for property owners.

“Make sure you document all your serial numbers,” he said. “In the event you are burglarized, which I hope never happens, the more information you’re able to provide law enforcement, the easier it is to recover.”

As of Monday night, the man has not been charged, but the Clay County Sheriff’s Department said it will likely happen soon.
