Video: Man Murdered Trying to Break Up Fight

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police are hoping a video will prompt witnesses to come forward with information about a murder that may have occurred after someone felt disrespected when they didn’t hear an “excuse me” from another person.

The video from a business next door shows a crowd apparently scattering after 23-year-old Marcus Heilderberg was shot outside a bar called Retro at Truman and McGee early Saturday morning.

“It elevated from there, unfortunately,” said Capt. Steve Young with Kansas City police. “I think the fight got sent outside and our victim was actually trying to break the fight up and he died for it.”

Heilderberg’s sister never thought she would have to bury her younger brother just a few years after burying their mother.

“I never thought it would be me,” said Monique Heilderberg. “I never thought it would be me, you know, the family of a senseless violence act.”

She said her brother was a good father and a peacemaker. She wasn’t surprised to hear he was the person trying to break up a fight when he got shot. She is surprised that no one has come forward with information about the shooting.

“If it was your son, if it was your brother, your cousin, your friend, you would want someone to give tips and help out with your family,” she said.

This is the second killing Marcus’ father has had to deal with. His brother was killed for a similar reason when he was 16 years old.

A vigil will be held at the park near 43rd & Brooklyn on Thursday night at 6:45 for Marcus.

Police say they have received no tips in the case. Witnesses are urged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
