Teen charged with resisting arrest, assault on officers after fight at Worlds of Fun

Deandre Hooker

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 17-year-old is charged with assault in Clay County related to a fight at Worlds of Fun the evening of July 4. According to the probable cause statement, at about 9:20 p.m., park security was called out to break up a fight. They found a large crowd of about 100 people in the area. According to authorities, families were pushing to get away from the crowd and the fight. Some were struggling to push through with strollers and small children.

Officers had broken up a fight among females in the same area. Worlds of Fun security requested assistance to remove two people from the park who they say were failing to follow directives. Police say Deandre Hooker, 17, was one of those people asked to leave.

“While walking them to the exit Deandre repeatedly stopped, turned around, puffed his chest at them as if he wanted to fight or intimidate them, argued with the security officers and eventually stopped walking and refused to move,” the charging document says.

An emergency medical technician in the area came to assist the officers.

According to the officers, Hooker broke free and struck the EMT on the right side above his ear five times with a closed fist.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrived to assist with the arrest. They say as they lifted Hooker up, he turned his head toward one deputy and spit on his glasses and into his eye. They say he also attempted to jerk away and kick the deputy when the deputy searched his left front pocket.

In addition to the assault charges, Hooker is also charged with resisting arrest. He was with his younger brother at the park at the time.
