PLATTE CITY, Mo. — An 18-year old Kansas City man made an emotional courtroom apology Thursday to the mother of a woman he killed while driving high on K2, a synthetic form of marijuana.
Logan Pope pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for the October 15th, 2012 head-on crash that killed 25-year old Ashley Miller on Missouri Highway 92 just west of Smithville. Investigators found glass pipes in Pope’s car and said his blood tested positive for synthetic marijuana.
Pope spent 42 days in the hospital and ten weeks in a wheelchair before recovering from 27 broken bones.
In a Platte County courtroom, he apologized to Linda Miller, telling the victim’s mom, “I’m very genuinely sorry for your loss. If I could go back and change it I would. I think about her every night before I go to bed. It’s not like something that just happened and I moved on from…I’m just sorry,” Pope said.
Linda Miller was too upset to speak with FOX 4 after the plea hearing but in her statement to the judge called her daughter: “A true genuine blessing from God.”
After the plea hearing, Pope told FOX 4 in an exclusive interview that he wants, “To be a nurse now and take care of people who’ve been hurt themselves.”
He also said he appreciates Linda Miller accepting his courtroom apology.
“It was very important to me but if she didn’t accept it I would’ve still understood. She lost her daughter and if I was an adult and I had kids and I lost them, I don’t know if I would be able to accept the apology,” Pope said.
Pope will be sentenced November 21st. Under his plea deal, he’s expected to receive a 120 days at a drug treatment facility followed by five years probation. If he violates probation, he could serve three years in prison.
