Thieves break into cars to steal valuables left behind

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Overland Park Police are warning drivers about a rash of automobile burglaries—29 victims in the month of March alone.   With the holiday weekend approaching, they want to remind everyone to lock up and don’t leave valuables in their vehicles.

Thieves have hit hotel and motel parking lots between Nall and Roe on 110th Street.

On March 5th thieves broke out windows and burglarized 15 vehicles, taking GPS units, ipods, cell phones and even cups of change.

Then another 14 victims reported being burglarized on March 27th.

Police say this doesn’t mean the hotels are not safe, it’s that their parking lots can be easy targets if people leave their valuables in plain view.

“We’ve seen an increase of some of the burglaries in our hotel, motel areas. We want to encourage people who are coming into town, whether it’s personal or other busienss to lock up their stuff, take it inside their room with them, take the extra step and maybe put it in the trunk,” said Gary Mason with the Overland Park Police Dept.

Police recommend people lock their vehicles, take their valuables with them and report any suspicious activity to police.
