True ‘snow angels’ make appearances across KC

OLATHE, Kan. — Snow angels are popping up all over the metro. After two feet of snow in many places, it couldn’t come at a better time.

“I couldn’t get out the snow, wasn’t able to dig out myself,” Erlene Rucker Crosslin said. She’s older and doesn’t get around as well as she would like, so when the snow stopped, she went shopping for help.

After striking out, she called her city council member. And, rather than pass the buck, Jermaine Reed picked up a shovel himself.

Reed represents the third district in Kansas City, Mo.

“This is what we are supposed to be doing, neighbors helping neighbors and no other place I would have rather have been today helping her,” Reed said.

Ms. Crosslin was nearly in tears when Reed finished — she hugged him and thanked him, over and over.

“Thank you” may be the most popular phrase in the metro before all the snow melt. One the Kansas side of the state line, a band of snow angels was hard at work too.

Shannon Clark and her husband Walter feel fortunate and want to lend a hand.

“We just got connected through our church and just helping people out when we can,” Shannon Clark explained.

The Clark’s had their work cut out for them when the arrived at Don Hockensmith’s duplex. Both driveways have two car garages and most of it was buried under 2-3 feet of snow.

Don’s 81-year-old father lives right next door, but the former Marine is has a bad heart and is disabled. Don and his wife are too, he says the Snow Brigade made all the difference.

“Makes me feel very blessed, it really does.”
