KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Two boys, ages 14 and 15, were charged with first-degree rape on Friday according to a news release from the Jackson County Judicial Circuit Court. Jackson County’s Juvenile Officer said the alleged crime occurred at Southwest Early College Campus on Thursday, which is located at 6512 Wornall Road.
News of the rape spread quickly at the school. FOX 4 spoke with several students on Friday afternoon who said everyone was talking about it. The kids said fights are a daily occurrence inside the school but a rape on campus and during school hours surprised them
A police report described the victim as visibly upset, crying and unable to speak at first. Then she told police that as she was walking to class after lunch, the 14-year-old grabbed her by the neck while the 15-year-old lifted her up and carried her to a secluded room on the second floor that according to the police report is supposed to be locked and secured.
It was in that room, the victim tells police, the 14-year old raped her. According to an eighth grade Southwest student, who we are not identifying, the boy then returned to class.
“There was like blood on his shirt but he was telling everyone it was from fighting so everyone just thought it was like a fight. But then she filed a report and she said he raped him(her),” the student said.
Police records show the girl immediately reported the incident and admitted to police this wasn’t the first assault by one of the boys. She told police the first incident happened two weeks ago, but she didn’t know who he was until she recognized him in her second hour class.
A former Southwest student said she left the campus last year because of fighting. She said rape goes beyond anything she thought would happen inside the school.
The district said in a statement it is addressing the allegations but would answer no further questions about the incident.
Both boys were arrested on Thursday and are currently being held in secure detention at the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center. Due to their ages, no identifying information will be released.
