UCM imposing new rules for freshmen

WARRENSBURG, Mo. — On Tuesday, 1,900 students began their freshman year at the University of Central Missouri and only 55% of them are expected to graduate within six years.

That’s why the University of Central Missouri is starting a new program for all incoming students called the “Learning to a Greater Degree Contract.”  The goal is to get more students to graduate in four years.

“Getting across the finish line in four years with your degree makes such a difference, not only for the investment of time, energy and talent you’ve put into college but also we know what a difference a degree makes in today’s economy,” said University President Dr. Chuck Ambrose.

The contract asks all students to live on campus their first two years, maintain excellent classroom attendance, average at least 15-credit hours a semester and to meet with their academic advisor at least once a semester.

“If you do that, we’ll provide the support and engagement inside and outside the classroom, ” says Dr. Ambrose.

Students who stay on course the first three years will be offered a $1,000 dollar scholarship their senior year.

“I think that’s a great incentive, it gets more kids motivated,” said Marissa Mulvaney, a freshman student from Branson.
