WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. — Authorities are investigating after a United States Air Force airman was wounded in a shooting early Saturday morning.

According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, the unidentified 22-year-old airman was shot at his home near Warrensburg around 4:40 a.m. on Saturday. Authorities say the shooting occurred when another male subject—identified only as a friend and acquaintance of the victim—fired a handgun in the home, striking the airman.

The airman was taken to a Kansas City-area hospital in critical condition.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with this Airman, the Airman’s family, and all others impacted by this event,” said Brig. Gen. Glen VanHerck, 509th Bomb Wing commander, in a statement released on Saturday.

The suspect in the shooting has been taken into custody pending formal charges.
