Vehicle plows through front of Shawnee liquor store

SHAWNEE, Kan. — A leisurely trip to the liquor store turned into one scary experience Saturday afternoon when a car slammed through the side of the building.

It happened around 3:30 at Missie’s Discount Liquors off Shawnee Mission Parkway in Shawnee.

An employee said about 20 people were inside shopping when a black Cadillac plowed through the front glass wall.

Firefighters said a woman in her 60s was driving. Witnesses said she explained she meant to press the brakes when she hit the gas and accidentally accelerated through the store.

“That could’ve been me,” said employee Andrew Bateman as he pointed to a pile of debris. “That could’ve possibly of been me. That could’ve been someone else. Somebody could be hurt on the ground right now.”

Thankfully, no one was hurt, not even the driver, according to firefighters at the scene.

Shop owner Missie Scott said she has insurance but doesn’t know how much it’s going to cost to fix the damage and replace the lost inventory.

However, she has roped off the damage so she could safely reopen the store within hours of the crash. She plans to operate during her normal business hours while crews continue repairing the damage.
