INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – It’s been a week since the mysterious stabbing death of 22-year-old Corey Laykovich and still no arrests have been made.
Family and friends held a vigil for him on the corner of Crackerneck Rd. and 39th St., hoping to bring some justice to Corey.
“This has been the worst week of my life,” Terry Laykovich, Corey’s father, said.
Corey’s family said the last conversation Corey had was with a friend on the phone, saying he was going to Quik Trip around the corner. His family said two hours later, Corey’s brother found him in his bedroom bathroom with stab wounds.
“Why? He still had his wallet, he still had his phone. It wasn’t a robbery. I don’t understand,” Terry Laykovich said.
“Anyone who could help me erase that part by alleviating some of those questions, it would just it would mean the world to me,” Michelle Metje, Corey’s mother, said.
Independence Police said they also want answers. Detectives said they came to meet with the group just in case anyone knew something they didn’t.
“If somebody has seen someone that just looks out of place we need to know, because right now that’s kind of where its stuck,” Metje said.
Metje said her son was very honorary. They said he had a short stint in the Army, but left because he realized he couldn’t hurt anyone. They said he was going back to school at Wright Career College, where his mother also worked.
His family said Corey was trying to figure out what he wanted to do with his future, but it’s a future that will no longer be lived by him. But his family said at least others will have one because of him.
“I know that there are five families out there, who have just as many people that my son is their miracle,” Metje said.
Corey’s family said he donated his heart, lungs, kidneys, pancreas and even his liver that was punctured.
