KANSAS CITY, Mo. — While we might have dodged the so-called “fiscal cliff,” there’s still uncertainty on what it could mean for your taxes — especially if you’re planning on a refund.
Getting a jump start on Tax day this year might prove to be downright difficult.
“I think we are going to see refunds a lot slower this year,” said Julie Welch, a tax preparer.
Welch said there won’t be a lot of changes when it comes to how you file. But those that do occur, still have to be figured out.
The IRS said Thursday they’re uncertain about the impact the “fiscal cliff” deal will have on 2012 returns.
“We are going to see a lot of similar tax rates — the alternative minimum tax was the other big thing that was going to hit about 30 million more people and that got fixed,” Welch said.
The other issue — computer software and forms normally used during tax season are changing.
H&R Block in Kansas City said they’re still waiting for correct forms and details on how to fix “at home” software.
Welch thinks there will be other reasons, besides forms, leading to a delay.
“I think we are going to see refunds a lot slow this year, even though the IRS will still be geared up because of identity theft issues where were going on.”
“In fact, if you go to the ‘Where Is My Refund?’ part of the IRS website it’s not going to give you a date anymore — it’s going to say they’ve either received or accepted and then say your refund is in process,” Welch said.
The tax filing deadline is set for April 15.
