KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Color Run is coming to Kansas City on Saturday, June 30th. Tens of thousands of people will be out at Arrowhead Stadium to get paint thrown all over them while they’re running. The event is so popular, another metro-area city is having one this fall, so what’s all the fuss about?
Thousands of people show up with two rules: to wear white and to be ready to go when the starting gun sounds. The rest is colorful, organized mayhem, and Ashley Gilstrap can’t wait.
“I’m really excited to have paint thrown on me to be honest,” Gilstrap said.
Her race is June 30th, there’s another one in Kansas City July 1st, and after city approval Tuesday night, a similar run will be held in Lawrence this fall. The Lawrence Convention and Visitor’s Bureau expects at least 12,000 people to participate in their event October 6th that will wind throughout downtown Lawrence. Officials there hope to draw in people from surrounding cities and attract them to all the sights of Lawrence.
Runs like the Color Run are popular because the concept is unique.
“This is the first time that I have heard of anything remotely like this,” said Gilstrap.
Runners don’t really have to be runners at all. They can be walkers and they can be any age; they just have to be willing to get powdered paint thrown all over them.
It sounds good to Gilstrap. She’s just excited to have some good, “clean” fun.
