Who Still Files Taxes Through Snail Mail?

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – It’s April 17, the deadline to get your tax papers to Uncle Sam. But Tuesday also marks the final day post offices will open late on tax day.

It’s just business as usual inside this post office at Union Station.

” I had no problem trying to get a place to park, so I’m wondering where everyone else is,” said Kip Ludwigs, mailing in her tax documents.

Perhaps, everyone else filed online. A survey reveals an overwhelming 87 percent of Americans do it that way, but not everyone.

“I’m just old school. I know it’s done. If there’s a problem I can say this is where I took it,” said Gary Henderson, mailing his tax papers in also.

Another person mailing their tax papers in, Maryanah Mosely-Friends.

She said, “E-file seems to be a little complicated when you can’t talk to someone.”

But U.S. Postal Service spokesperson Richard Watkins said because more people aren’t using snail nail anymore, it’s changing the way they do things.  He said next year, USPS will no longer open late to accommodate late tax filers.  They’ve had this tradition since the 1970’s.

Watkins said they will process anywhere from 600,000 to 700,000 pieces of mail on a typical weeknight.

“Tonight, we expect just over a million and about 400,000 of those mail pieces will be tax returns, so there’s still a great number of people who continue to file their taxes the traditional.
