Woman charged in Kan. murder-for-hire scheme

Rebecca N Burch

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Kan. — A 42-year-old Jefferson County woman has been charged in an alleged murder-for-hire scheme. Rebecca N. Burch, of Lakeside Village, has been accused of trying to give her government assistance check in exchange for killing an ex-boyfriend.

Jefferson County law enforcement became aware of the plot last Thursday when Burch approached a witness and proposed the deal, said Sheriff Jeff Herrig.

The witness then reported the incident to the sheriff’s office.

The exact sum of money remains unclear, but Herrig confirmed that a government assistance check was offered as compensation.

Burch was arrested Friday after an undercover officer wore a hidden recording device while posing as a potential contract killer interested in Burch’s offer, Herrig said.

Burch was charged with solicitation of first-degree murder on Monday. She is currently being held on $150,000 bond in the county jail.

If convicted, she could face between 55 months and 20 years in prison, depending on the nature of any previous offenses.

Burch is scheduled to appear in court again on June 12.
