KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A woman who testified under oath that she was in the company of now convicted murderer Diamond Blair was sentenced to 10 years in jail on Thursday. Daquetta D. Davis, 27, was found guilty on two counts of perjury according to a news release from Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker’s office. Both sentences carry a 10-year jail sentence; the prosecutor’s office said the sentences will run concurrently, which will keep Davis behind bars for the next decade.
“A criminal trial is a search for the truth and by your actions you have perverted the system. I felt like a fool for even swearing you in. What’s the point?” Judge Robert Schieber said at sentencing.
According to a probable cause statement, Davis gave testimony on February 6th that she was with Blair when the murder occurred in 2009, which provided Blair the ‘concrete alibi’ he needed to get out of jail. She also said that she had no contact with Blair between 2009 and 2012, with the exception of one phone call.
Later that day, jail records were searched for the phone number that Davis had given to the court. A check revealed multiple calls from Blair in prison to the number she provided. Furthermore, her phone number was called from other inmate ID numbers. It was later revealed that Blair would have her contact him using a three-way call feature in an effort to cover up their communication.
Davis was arrested on February 7th. She waived her Miranda Rights and told investigators that she had given false testimony the previous day. She said that she dated Blair in 2008 but hadn’t seen him in 2009. She said they reconnected while Blair was in jail serving time for a felon-in possession conviction.
She said they had continuous phone contact and in January 2013 Blair had asked her to testify on his behalf. She agreed and was put in touch with Blair’s attorneys. Blair was convicted on February 9th of Montague Kevin Ashline’s murder that occurred in June of 2009.
