KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The 2012 NFL Draft wrapped up on Saturday, and the Kansas City Chiefs drafted a total of eight players overall.
Memphis defensive tackle Dontari Poe headlined day one of the Chiefs’ draft, selected 11th overall in round one. At 6-4 and 345 pounds, Poe is a true nose tackle that can start right away in the Chiefs’ 3-4 defensive scheme.
Illinois offensive tackle Jeff Allen was selected 44th overall in round two. Coming in at 6-4 and 306 lbs, Allen started 47 consecutive games at Illinois. Primarily a left tackle with some right tackle experience, Allen is expected to play left guard for the Chiefs.
Oklahoma OT Donald Stephenson went 74th overall in the third round. Stephenson is a 6-6, 307 lb. Blue Springs, Mo. native and graduate of Blue Springs High. A lifelong Chiefs fan, Stephenson started every game at LT for the Sooners in 2011.
In the fourth round, the Chiefs selected Fresno State wide receiver Devon Wylie. At 5-9 and 185 lbs, Wylie is a prototypical slot receiver and punt returner. He returned two punts for TD’s in 2011, and posted a 40-yard dash time of 4.39 at the NFL combine in March.
Alabama cornerback De’Quan Menzie was chosen in the fifth round. Menzie started 20 games over the last two years for the Tide, winning a National Championship in 2011.
Texas A&M running back Cyrus Gray went in the sixth round. He is the first Aggie RB to be drafted by the Chiefs since RB Greg Hill was selected in the first round of the 1994 draft.
The Chiefs’ two seventh round picks included San Diego State DT Jerome Long, and Michigan WR Junior Hemingway.
