KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals have announced that George Brett is stepping down from his interim hitting coach position. Brett will return to previous role as Vice President of Baseball Operations, according to a news release from the team.
“My lifelong passion after playing was not to be a hitting coach, but Dayton asked me if I would consider it, and I did, but only on the promise that it would be on an interim basis,” Brett said in the release. “There is a ton of talen here and doing this for almost two months has prepared me to be a better advisor to Dayton and his staff.”
The team announced that Pedro Grifol, who has been working in tandem with Brett, will be the team’s hitting coach. Brett accepted the role on May 30, the Royals went 25-22 after he accepted the position.
