Giants Smash Cardinals 9-0, Advance to World Series

SAN FRANCISCO — For the second time in three years, the San Francisco Giants are heading to the World Series.

In their game seven shellacking of the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night at AT&T Park, the Giants also matched a postseason record with six consecutive elimination game wins. All six of those wins came in this year’s postseason, making the Giants the first team since the 1985 Royals to accomplish the feat.

Starting pitcher Matt Cain hit an RBI single in the second inning to give the Giants a 2-0 lead. Cain (2.19 ERA) had an even better night on the mound, tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out four and walking one.

In the third, the Cardinals fell apart. A broken-bat three-run RBI double by Giants right fielder Hunter Pence made it 5-0. Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse was pulled, and the Giants tacked on another pair of runs to make it 7-0.

The Cards used a total of three pitchers in the third inning alone. Lohse (7.04 ERA) surrendered five runs on six hits in two innings of work.

The Giants will take on the Detroit Tigers for game one of the World Series on Wednesday night at AT&T Park.
