KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On the eve of game one of the American League Championship Series, Kansas City is sending yet another strong message of support; this time from the city council.
Until Thursday, there ‘was’ a Baltimore avenue, now it has a new name; Royals Avenue.
They say you can’t fight city hall, but apparently it can fight for you. That’s what Councilman Dick Davis did for the Royals when he read a proclamation to ceremonially change Baltimore Avenue to Royals Avenue.
Councilman Jermaine Reed proudly handed a street sign over to Mayor Sly James, who called on the council to vote.
It passed unanimously then Councilman Reed had the entire chamber chanting “Let’s Go Royals.”
News traveled fast to 18th and Royals Avenue. Raygun sells custom Kansas City themed t-shirts.
“I think it’s great, like Royals mania down here,” said manager Jessica Brinck. “It seems like everyone has always had that pride, but it’s like amplified now.”
Across the street Hilary Glynn at Pizzabella says the Royals postseason run has been awesome for business and the name change will be taken seriously.
“We are going to say Royals Avenue right and if they are unsure of where that is, we’ll just give them the cross streets,” explained Hilary Glynn.
Neapolitan style pizza’s baked in wood fired ovens will be ready for every Royals game. If you get thirsty they’ve had some fun and “Royally” changed names of their drinks as well.
No street signs will be changed; it’s just a ceremonial show of support.
