LUBBOCK, Tex. — After last second shots beat them in early season games against the likes of Villanova and Colorado, the Kansas Jayhawks finally got a break on Tuesday night.
Their tilt with Texas Tech featured some late game heroics from their two most heralded freshman. Andrew Wiggins scored on a put back two-point field goal with less than two seconds to play, and Kansas (20-6, 11-2) won a thriller, 64-63 against the Red Raiders (13-13, 5-8). Wiggins scored after teammate Joel Embiid lost control of the ball under the Kansas basket.
“We got lucky,” said Kansas Coach Bill Self.
Luck? Maybe. But the victory now helps Kansas pick up another game on second place Texas in the Big 12 standings. The Jayhawks now lead Texas by 2 full games. The Longhorns lost to Iowa State Tuesday night, 85-76.
Wiggins led Kansas with 19 points, while Embiid added 18. They were the only Kansas players who scored in double-digits. Kansas next plays Saturday night by hosting Texas at Allen Fieldhouse.
