KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The No. 11 seeded Kansas Jayhawks advanced to the Sweet Sixteen on Tuesday night after a sensational upset over the No. 3 seed Delaware Fightin Blue Hens in Little Rock, Ark.
Following 10 lead changes in the 1st half, Delaware led Kansas 37-31 at halftime.
The Jayhawks (21-12, 8-10 Big 12) came out of the break on fire. They went on a 22-6 run and led 53-43 with 12:30 to play in the 2nd half.
The Blue Hens (31-2, 18-0 CAA) answered with a 14-6 run and trailed 59-57 at the 7:25 mark, but never regained the lead.
Delaware was led in scoring by the nation’s leading scorer, junior forward Elena Delle Donne. She finished with 34 points and 10 rebounds.
Kansas junior guard Angel Goodrich led the Hawks with 27 points.
The 5-4 Goodrich became a trending topic on twitter following the upset win over the Blue Hens. Senior forward Aishah Sutherland recorded a double-double for the Hawks with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The KU women’s team is in the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 1999.
Kansas is one of three schools with both men and women’s teams in the Sweet Sixteen, along with the Baylor Bears and Kentucky Wildcats.
The Jayhawks will take on head coach Pat Summitt and the No. 2 seed Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.
