DETROIT — For the first time since 2006, the Detroit Tigers are heading to the World Series. The Tigers beat the New York Yankees 8-1 on Thursday afternoon in game four of the ALCS at Comerica Park.
Delmon Young’s RBI single gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Right fielder Avisail Garcia extended the lead to 2-0 with an infield RBI single in the third.
A four-run fourth inning put the game out of reach. AL Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera crushed a two-run blast to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead, and a two-run jack by Jhonny Peralta made it 6-0.
Former Missouri Tigers ace Max Scherzer pitched a beauty for Detroit. Scherzer (1-0, 1.59 ERA) gave up one run on two hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out 10 and walking two.
Yankees ace CC Sabathia turned in one of his worst performances of the season. In 3 2/3 innings, Sabathia (0-1, 12.27 ERA) gave up six runs on 11 hits, fanning three and walking two.
Center fielder Austin Jackson and Peralta added extra icing on the cake with solo home runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Tigers will face either the St. Louis Cardinals or the San Francisco Giants in the World Series.
A potential rematch of the 2006 World Series beckons. That year, it took the Cardinals five games to beat the Tigers to earn their 10th World Series title.
