LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — Two-year-old Kellen Giegerich of Lee’s Summit has type one diabetes.  Because of his young age, it’s difficult for his parents to manage his blood sugar – that’s why the family made a special trip to KCI Airport on Monday morning.

That’s where they met the family’s new diabetic alert dog, Shadow. Dogs like Shadow are bred to monitor the fluctuations in sugar levels.

To cover the cost of the service dog, a motorcycle poker run benefit will be held Sunday, July 22, at Larry’s Getaway N on 40 Highway in Blue Springs. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the ride starting at 11:30 a.m.
