OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The Overland Park Police Department arrested a man Wednesday who they say was trying to kidnap a baby. Surya Kiran Turaga, 24, faces three felonies and two misdemeanors related to the incident.

The attempted kidnapping happened at a Genesis Health Club at 2:11 p.m. The club says an employee intervened when Turaga allegedly tried to pick up another employee’s child in the kid’s club area. Turaga is no longer allowed at the club.

The infant’s mother told police she did not know the suspect. Turaga did not run away from Genesis, but rather stayed until officers arrived. There was a brief struggle with officers before they arrested him.

No officers were injured. The child was treated at the scene and is expected to be fine.

Turaga is charged with aggravated battery, aggravated child endangerment, legal obstruction, and two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer. He was arrested on Wednesday and released Thursday on $5,000 bail, his first court date isn’t known yet.

This incident is still under investigation. Anyone with information should contact the Overland Park Police Department at (913) 895-6300.
