KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Summer is over and school is back in session on Monday for kids in the Kansas City School District – and district officials are marking the day by handing out thousands of free back-packs to students.
District officials, including superintendent Dr. Stephen Green, and volunteers from community organizations will be handing out nearly 10,000 backpacks filled with school supplies and a personal care kit at district schools on Monday.
The free backpacks will be distributed to students from Kindergarten to sixth grade.
Monday is also the first day of school for students in the Kansas City Kansas School District, along with first through ninth grade students in the Gardner-Edgerton School District. Shawnee Mission School District students in grades 1-7 and 9 will have a half-day of school on Monday, while in the Turner School District, students in grades 1-5 will also have a half-day of school.
