LOS ANGELES (KTLA) — Between the drilling sounds and the medieval-looking instruments, going to the dentist can be a nerve-wracking experience. It’s enough to make you cringe even before you hit the seat. If drugs and prayers aren’t enough, now there’s something a bit more natural.
The treatment is called NuCalm and it involves holistic pills, dark glasses, music and electrodes behind your ears.
Dentists like Dr. Isaac Comfortes say using Nucalm can help patients who have anxiety.
According to Dr. Comfortes, some patients even fall asleep, allowing dentists to work on patients who normaly would be very comfortable.
“What happens is when you’re in the pre-sleep stage you don’t respond to being scared,” said Dr. Comfortes.
Our intern Joy Wang gave the system a try by getting her teeth whitened.
“I was more afraid of the NuCalm than I was of the dentist but I thought it was extremely relaxing and the entire time I didn’t want to move,” said Wang.
The treatment seemed to work in her case.
Wang went on to say, “I think that patients should really try it because then they’re not going to be as anxious when they go to see the dentist especially when they have so many drilling tools and you always just want to fall asleep.”
The NuCalm procedure doesn’t necessarily address the physical pain, but is meant to help patients deal with fears.
