KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Survivors of the Great Flood of 1951 were reunited on Saturday. People who remember the flood got together to share stories.
Most of the people who took part in the union were children or teens at the time of the flood. While that was a long time ago, the stories they told made it seem like it happened yesterday.
“The national guards actually took us out of the water from the roof,” said flood survivor Frank Salas.
“I knew we had to hurry up and get out and take off in a taxi because none of my parents drove,” said Carmen Oropeza.
More than 15,000 people were evacuated. Houses in Armourdale had water all the way up to their roofs. The stockyards and west bottoms were also affected.
