INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A Blue Springs man has been charged in connection to an early-morning crash on I-70 that killed a Missouri Department of Transportation worker, prosecutors said on Friday.
David C. Murdick, 35, faces felony first-degree involuntary manslaughter charges in connection to the crash on eastbound I-70 near Lee’s Summit Road that killed 50-year-old Clifton Scott.

Scott was providing traffic control assistance for a crash that happened at about 1:50 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-70 at I-470. One person was seriously injured in that crash and there were reportedly other serious injuries when people were thrown from the car.
Then, as emergency crews arrived and set up at the scene, prosecutors say that a car driven by Murdick hit Scott’s truck, causing a fire. Scott was outside the truck at the time but was killed at the scene. He leaves his fiance, a brother, sister and a 14-year-old son.
Prosecutors say that Murdick tested at .184 blood-alcohol level at an area hospital following the collision. He remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Prosecutors have asked for a $75,000 cash-only bond.
In a statement released on Friday afternoon, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon reacted to Scott’s death, saying, “Public service is a high calling. Clifton Scott gave his life while working to safeguard others.”
