LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. – A Lee’s Summit West High School football star and top college recruit found himself in trouble with the law on Monday.
Lee’s Summit Police said they have charged Jamone Boyd in connection to an incident in a school parking lot. Police spokesperson Sgt. Chris Depue said he can’t tell us exactly what Boyd has been charged with because the officer’s report hasn’t been completed, but Depue said the charges are municipal, not state charges.
Depue also said a use of force report is being filled out, indicating there was some sort of force was used in the course of making the arrest.
Boyd, 18, is a 6’4, 255-pound senior on the Lee’s Summit West football team. But according to fellow student Kaitlyn Garrison, Boyd wasn’t hitting other players on Monday.
“I was eating lunch and I looked out the window and I saw Jamone hitting the police officer and then running away,” Garrison told FOX 4.
Depue said an administrator asked for help from a school resource officer in approaching the athlete Monday afternoon. Depue said it started in the parking lot and the situation escalated from there. Details of what happened are still unclear, but Boyd was eventually taken to police headquarters by the school resource officer.
The news spread like wildfire around campus.
“It happened around fifth hour and I heard it right after sixth hour in passing period,” said junior Sophie Harrington.
“I guess it kind of surprises me but stuff happens,” said junior Maddie McFarland.
Garrison said she met Boyd a few times, and Monday’s incident was unexpected.
“He was really nice and kind to me. He was actually pretty sweet, like I really didn’t expect this to happen,” Garrison said.
Boyd has aspirations to play college ball as he told FOX 4’s Sports Department in a “Blue Chip” segment last August.
“It’s motivated me a lot, like all my teammates and like Nick and Mikey and them. We all hang out everyday, it’s just a good atmosphere out here and that’s how I like it to be in college. I want to move from high school to college just like it is now,” said Boyd in August.
Boyd has not committed to any college yet.
School district spokesperson Janice Phelan told FOX 4 there was an arrest made, but would not comment any further.
