KANSAS CITY, MO —

I’d rather just talk about the five most interesting, genre breaking and original movies of 2012 which was an excellent year at the movies. You can catch my Top 10 List at fox4kc.com. Let’s go!

My man Ridley Scott, sorry about your bro, took the  Sci-Fi genre to the next level with “Prometheus.” While quite if few people got tangled in the is this a prequel to “Alien” debate Scott was busy delivering a super suspenseful and thought provoking masterpiece. Like the Beastie Boys this movie is crafty.

Next on the list is “The Cabin in the Woods.” The horror genre has been on coast mode for a while feasting on ho-hum franchises like the Saw and Paranormal Activity movies. “The Cabin in the Woods” is ridiculously original and crazy scary. Them filmmakers really mixed it up with this one.

“The Middle of Nowhere” is an amazing movie about a black woman’s plight. Written, directed and produced by Ava DuVarney who brilliantly delivers an insightful, emotional and deeply authentic film that audaciously explores an issue that many women deal with. My man is in prison. Not sure I want my heart locked up though.

It took four viewings but I  finally got the trippy brilliance and creative defiance that is exhibited in the cinematic poem “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” You’ve never seen anything like it nor ever been on an experience like the one this small budget tour-de-force takes you on. Hush your puppy! And jump in the bath tub yaw.

And finally Quentin Tarantino exposes America’s biggest and ugliest scar with a bloody and violent love story slash revenge flick slash spaghetti western slash slave epic. “Django Unchained” is a buck wild, in your face display of the gutsy filmmaking ever. Yes, it’s designed to make you feel uncomfortable and you should be but you’ll be entertained. Best movie of the year. Or any year. QT does it again.
