KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Pet Project helps metro pets find forever homes. Now the organization is facing some life and death situations.
The shelter formerly known as Halfway Home adoption has more than 250 animals that need homes. The KC Pet Project has 195 dogs and 64 cat that will make perfect pets according to the director Kim Stanton.
“We have a variety of dogs,” Stanton said. “I think if people come out here they will find something that they like.”
Seven-year-old Karma Wright found an adorable little dog within 20 minutes of arriving at the shelter.
“This is my first time getting a dog,” Wright said. “I am so happy!”
“It breaks her heart knowing some of these animals will be euthanized if they’re not adopted,” said Kristie Myers, Karma’s Mom. “That’s why we are here at the pound instead of getting one from the pet store besides that it’s a lot cheaper.”
If you’re interested in saving one of the animal’s at the shelter, but you’re not quite ready to commit to being a pet owner, the shelter is also looking for people to foster animals. The animal can live with families temporarily until they find a forever home.
“The harsh reality is that some of these animals maybe euthanized,” Stanton said.
The shelter is making pet adoptions more affordable by cutting the adoption fee in half. That means you can adopt a dog for $50 and a cat for $35.
“We like for people to if they have children, to bring the children in the family so we can get an idea of how the animal interact with the family and vice versa,” Stanton said. “If people have dogs at home they are welcome to bring a dog with them and we can take a potential adoptive dog out and let them interact.”
