LAWRENCE, Kan. — Police in Lawrence say that they’re thankful that a citizen was able to help police apprehend a suspect who attacked an officer last weekend.
Around 10:15 p.m. on Saturday, a man says he was driving home from dinner around the 1300 block of West Campus Road in Lawrence. That’s when he says someone physically hit his car.
The man, who asked not to be identified, says he called police and followed the man he believed was responsible, when he claims the man started targeting another car. Police say the suspect reportedly climbed on the car and jumped on top of it several times. They say the suspect then ran into the yard of the Chi Omega house, and a that’s where a police officer found the suspect.
“The contact initially was not violent,” said Sgt. Trent McKinley from the Lawrence Police Department.
Then something unknown changed.
“The individual attacked the officer and the officer started to physically struggle with him,” Sgt. McKinley said.
Seeing this, the witness who called police said he jumped into action without thinking.
“He got involved and he went over and helped hold this person enough so that the officer was able to get handcuffs on the suspect,” Sgt. McKinley explained.
Police say they’re thankful the witness was there and willing to help.
“It could have been dramatically different had the individual not gotten involved and helped the officer,” McKinley said.
