OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Update: Overland Park Fire Department cleared the scene Wednesday and returned the building back to maintenance staff. They’re now working with a structural engineer to solve the sagging roof.
The Macy’s located at 95th and Metcalf in Overland Park, Kan., was evacuated Wednesday morning due to a sagging roof. Shortly after 10 a.m. an employee inside the building noticed some ceiling tiles were bowed and a sprinkler head was being pushed down.
The Overland Park fire department was called to the scene and after discovering about three to four feet of wet snow on the roof, and examining the ceiling sagging, both floors of the building were evacuated. Overland Park Building Safety also responded to the store and Macy’s called in a structural engineer for analysis.
Crews began removing the snow under the supervision of the engineer and city safety worker.
The store will remain closed until the store and engineers have finished their assessment about how to fix the problem.
Overland Park fire officials encourage other businesses to learn from this. They say business owners, especially those with flat roofs, should check their structures for any signs of stress.
